An unusually attractive REST ORBIS Antoninianus
Lot 1231
Postumus, Romano-Gallic Emperor, 260-269. Antoninianus (Billon, 21 mm, 4.44 g, 6 h), Cologne, 268. IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Postumus to right. Rev. REST ORBIS Postumus, in military attire, holding long scepter in left hand and extending his right to a turreted female figure (Res Publica?) kneeling to left before him, holding a cornucopiae in left hand. AGK (corr.) 75. Cunetio -. Elmer 592. An attractive example of this very rare issue. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Imperium Galliarum Collection, formed over the past 20 years, ex Künker 143, 6 October 2008, 714.

The reverse of this issue hails Postumus as restorer of the world, a rather ironic type in retroperspect: it was less than a year later that the emperor was killed by revolting troops and the 'Gallic Empire' drifted into turmoil.
